Hattie McDaniel: Mammie
(1895-1952)

Mammie took care of Scarlett and all of the O'Hara children.
At first she didn't like Captain Bulter,
because he was such a ladies man.
She used to wear the red silk petticoat Rhett bought her.

Hattie McDaniel was born in
Wichita, Kansas on June 10, 1895.
Hattie McDaniel was one of only
two African-American students in her
elementary school class.
In 1940 she became the first African American to win an Oscar
for the role of Mammie in Gone With The Wind.
She died of breast cancer at
age 57 on October 26, 1952.
